The Left Bank Theatre
My third year project required me to design a theatre on a difficult site in the north of Bath.
When I looked into the different modes of theatre, I found the political nature of experimental theatre interesting, and the idea that theatre could be used as a form of political and social expression. The name of the theatre is inspired by Jacques Copeau, an influential figure in experimental theatre stage design, who opened a theatre on the left bank of the Seine, knowingly far away from the commercial theatres of Paris. Therefore, performances at the Left Bank all have an element of political or social expression/commentary, but are delivered in variable forms.
